WCC provides an annual Spring concert usually in the month of May or June and an annual Christmas concert in December

Memorable Moments from our past 50 years

Added by Susan Haning who joined the choir in 1996: I LOVED my choir friends and performing with such talented and amazing people. Miss you all so much. Hi guys, hope to see you all sometime in the near future. Hugs to all.
Added by Abby Hayes who joined the choir in 2010: Singing on the National Mall with the Air Force Band and the Singing Sergeants, being directed by Col. Larry Lang, Eric Whitacre, and Francisco Nunez, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the National Anthem (June 2014). Added by Michelle Wheeler who first sang in the choir in 1971: Over the years, there have been many memorable experiences. I will never forget fainting on stage while I was pregnant during the December 1976 concert. Joanne Kornacki, a fellow alto, always carried smelling salts for that very reason. About 10 years later, my "baby" sang in the WCC Children's Choir that Betty Smith and Janet Grundeman were directing. About 6 years after that, she sang with the adult choir and even sang in a small group. Just a few years ago, her daughter, my granddaughter, sang with the choir and the two of us sang "Mary Did You Know?" as a feature duet. When we started performing spring concerts, my husband (Allen Wheeler), Bill Lake, and Terri Lee Hanshaw brought the audience (and the choir!) to their feet as they lip-synced "Stop, In the Name of Love" to an original recording of Dianna Ross and the Supremes. Bill Lake made green sequenced gowns and they all sported black wigs, make-up and even fake fingernails! Then there was the spring Allen paraded across the stage in an itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny, yellow polka-dot bikini while the choir performed that song. I have many more memories of performances at the Kennedy Center, National Christmas Tree, etc. Needless to say, the Wheeler family has derived much enjoyment from the choir over the years and we are proud to be a part of such a wonderful, talented group of musicians. Added by Joan Jamison who joined the choir in 1968: The great fellowship and the great friends that I have made as a member of the choir. The concerts at the Marine Corps Museum were a wonderful experience as was a performance at the Kennedy Center many years ago. I will always be grateful to Joanne Kornacki, who is now directing a choir in Heaven, for encouraging me to join the choir in 1968. |
